If Netanyahu's real goal in running for PM was to help solve the Iran threat, it is still possible for him to do that, but unfortunately he cannot accept a diplomatic approach in that direction. The way to lower the Iran threat is for Israel to make peace with Syria, which of course involves surrendering the Golan (something which Rabin, Peres, Barak, and Netanyahu HIMSELF agreed to do in the past. Peace with Syria will move Syria to the Western camp, bring an end to weapon shipments to Hizballah, reduce weapons to Gaza, and bring an end to Iran's influence in our region. It will be a major diplomatic coup. But is Netanyahu capable of this? Here are points from the Likud platform (2009): 1. Israel wants peace with Syria and all Arab neighbors. 2. Likud is pround that the Golan was annexed by Likud initiative. 3. Israel will continue to expand settlements in the Golan. 4. Israel wants peace talks with Syria without preconditions. Can Netanyahu deal seriously with Syrian peace? No way. Here is the real Netanyahu tragedy: He is so unreal that he wouldn't do even what ideologically he is able to do.
