Israel needs to create enemies for its survival. After two thousand years in which we lived in diaspora, most often in a relationship of unequals, held in contempt, culminating in the horrific trauma of the Shoah, we have developed a natinal consciousness that does not believe a normal peaceful relationship with others is possible. Both nationalistic and religious drives play into this. Israel now comes to judge the non-Jewish world in the same manner as they judged us and we hold them in contempt and demand that they judge us by standards that apply only to Israel. Israel is to be given carte blanche. This is payback time. Add to this the infusion of hundreds of thousands of immigrants from the former Soviet bloc who brought with them their racist, xenophobic ideologies where nationality is identical to citizenship and where western stype democracy had no roots. Combine this with the emergence of the worst, most tribal interpretations of our religious tradition and you have the state of affairs that exists in Israel today. None of this is sustainable. A normal nation cannot exist in this state of constant seige, where seige mentality has been so internalised that the making of peace simply cannot happen. Israel has been programmed against such a possibility.
