Strictly speaking a rabbi isn't required for a Jewish wedding if the participants themselves are knowledgeable enough, though it is wiser to have a m'sader kiddushin. What is required is that both participants be committed to the marriage, both trust each other, both understand and accept the ground rules of marriage. And the possibility of a divorce and how it would play out also must be part of their understanding.
