Leaving aside the detail that the Israel-lovers are clinging to a 'she was killed by a rock' theory that has apparently been discredited, there is the issue of the mysterious Palestinian rock. Something about it that justifies the most extreme measures. Protestors throw rocks. They threw rocks in Northern Ireland, they threw rocks in the Rodney King riots, I threw rocks in riots in the early seventies. Highlanders being driven from their glens in the nineteenth century threw rocks. Korean students throw rocks. No one hosed us or them with machine guns, opened up with tanks, or called in rocket-firing helicopters. I'm reminded of that 'shocking' video where British soldiers in Iraq ran down and -- gasp -- BEAT stone throwers. This at the same time that in Israel, it is of course quite all right to SHOOT rock throwers. Weird. The cop told me to 'go home, or he'd bust my ass.' I guess he should have shot me. Either that, or Israel is some sort of alternate moral universe.
