My grandfather,Rabbi Berel Brennglass was a very humble person. After the incident was over he had speaking offers from all over the United States and outside the country,to capitalize on his role in this event. He preferred to let the matter rest and never sought to exploiit his role in the incident. He was the real hero of the day.Thank God the young girl was found alive. What if the girl had been found dead? Could the tragedy that happened in Georgia in 1915 with the Leo Frank's case have happened in Massena? Fortunately the Massena incident had a happy ending and those officials responsible for making Anti Semitic accusations were either dismissed from their positions or apologized. The lesson of the story is that Jews, even in America must be ever vigilant that Anti Semetism can raise its ugly head at any time, even in this day and age It can take many forms including using israel bashing and depicting that Israel sanctions blood thirsty treatment of its enemies. These lies must be reputed. My grandfather in his own way and in his time stood up to those who perpetrated such lies as Jews committing blood libel .The Massena Incident is a reminder, as the philosopher George Santayana said," those who fail to learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them.".
