There are three main reasons why elections are likely in 2012 (one year earlier than scheduled): 1. Netanyahu would prefer that Israeli elections be held before the US elections. An Obama victory inevitably will help the peace camp and hurt Likud, since Obama seems to dislike Netanyahu (for good reason, incidentally). 2. Lieberman is likely to be indicted in 2-3 months. He will then have to resign as Foreign Minister, and said he will resign as head of his party within 6 months after that. It will be beneficial for Lieberman to bring down the government and lead his party in the election campaign before he is forgotten. 3. The Quartet will be putting the blame on Netanyahu for dragging out the peace process. Before the elections he cannot give an inch to the Palestinians (against Likud hardliners), but after the elections he will feel safe.
