Again we have an out-of touch Arab leader who wants Israel and the Palestinians to make painful comproises, but is he also ready to make painful compromise? It's time the world recognised that Jordan is an essential element in resolving the question of Palestine. With over 70% of its population being Palestinian, unless the Hashemite monarch begins the transition of evolving Jordan into a genuinely Palestinian state, his fate will be the same as his royal cousins in Iraq. A series of cantons in the West Bank can never be a viable Palestinian state - however if they are linked to a Palestinian republic in what we now call Jordan, then there is some hope of resolving the Israeli-Arab conflict.
