In the present-day Orthodox, Haredi and Hasidic world there is hardly any intermarriage today? Why? It is because of the Torah they learn and study and the Mitzvot and Halacha that they practice. One of Judaism's fundamentals is that Jews and non-Jews are different because the Jews were given an EXTRA "Neshama" when they entered into a covenant with G-d at Mt. Sinai over 3,300 years ago. That is the key factor that makes Jews and non-Jews different, and when A Jew knows that they are endowed with that special Neshama, they also know not to marry non-Jews who do not have have such a Neshama. Each morning, in the Siddur it mentions the soul that G-d gave to the Jew ("Elokai neshama shenatata bi tehora hi...") and that is why when a non-Jew wishes to convert, they will get that extra soul that they did not have prior to conversion, (the Neshama enters when they immerse in the Mikva supersvided by a Beth Din.)
