The majority of the world voted for the State of Israel's creation in 1948. Despite that unanimous approval Israel was forced to defend itself in three wars. A strong Israel has always been a deterrent but only for short periods of time while the Arab's licked their battle wounds. Given the situation in Egypt making peace with an Arab country is not a guarantee of peace. Therefore much more has to be put on the table other than Arab guarantees that peace will be exchanged for land. The domino has not stopped falling in the Middle East.Islamism has been given a serious chance at correcting the failures of dictators and opressors of the past. This does not bode well for Israel as Islamism and the existence of a Jewish State do not go hand in hand. Even if the Palestinians were to be given a homeland based on the 1967 lines, there would be new pressures to expand beyond that. After a successful peace agreement would be reached the extremists would press for more gains. Therefore the only real deterrent for the tiny State of Israel is tremendous military power, strategies and Political support.
