The Left of the mid-1900, Swedish as well as Israeli, spoke to people rising from poverty into dignity by inventing the welfare state. That Left offered a platform for transition. The democrats of today ask: "Transition from what, and to what?" It is my conviction that the collective strong Left, which speaks to ordinary people and holds the governing power in democracies, this Left should only reemerge as a result of an economic disaster. If the people of Israel or Sweden will become homogeneously poor again one day, the ideology of socialism would reemerge because it is a sensible way for an economically impoverished society to survive with dignity. During times of economic expansion, socialism is carried by the idealists alone. This is a pity, because the Left is much more than a lofty idea. It expresses an innate human mechanism for overcoming economic disasters, a practical mechanism which feeds the masses after revolutions. However, the revolutionary ideologist approaches to political stalemate have little in common with the Left that ruled bort Israel and Sweden half a century ago, beyond the fact that revolutions cause disasters which in the best of worlds cause the emergence of this Responsible Left. In conclusion, orphans of the hotheaded revolutionaries are not orphans of the Responsible Left.
