I have no way of evaluating how political the verdict is, whether the evidence in the case warranted the finding of guilt and whether, given Egyptian juridical standards, a life sentence rather than a death sentence was warranted. However, the Egyptian street, while it is entitled to its views, is all spleen and no brains. My hope for Egypt is that the decision was made free of the influence of the street or any other improper source and that this is the way forward for Egyptian justice.
