You give the USA too much credit when you talk of two ideologically opposed parties. The US voter has as much choice as a man offered either Coke or Pepsi. At least here in Israel there is a genuine spectrum of parties at the polls, the problem is that the individual politician has no accountability to the electorate, only to his party who chose his position on the list. In healthy democracies every citizen has a local congressman or MP to hold to account and who is dependant on the support of the citizen. That's what's lacking here. No MK feels that he owes the electorate anything, his loyalty is to the party, not the people.
