    1. Reader ratings notwithstanding, the UN General Assembly recognized the right of the Jewish People to declare a Jewish State in British Mandatory Palestine on 29 November 1947. This is a fact: the UN has recognized Israel as a Jewish State. You may not like it but you can't change it. 2. The Jews are a people. Here is what Wikipedia has to say: "Jews... or the Jewish people, are a nation and ethnoreligious group originating in the Israelites or Hebrews of the Ancient Near East." One can be Jewish without believing in the religion. This is true of a large percentage (42%) of Israeli Jews. 3. The names "Israel" amd "'Am Israe"l (the people of Israel) are customary Jewish synonyms for "Jews". This name "Israel" was chosen for the new state because it was felt that this name would fit the new state more than the more limited connotation of "Judah" or "Judea".
