Now that was why the Gaza incursion was ordered. They pulled the wool over Peretz eyes and told him that he had to be tough in his new role etc etc etc. After the Gaza Beach Massacre and the Salh-din Street massacre and the Industrial Street Massacre, the IDF looked like a bunch of amatuers and their "investigations" became a source for ridicule. Then the abduction of Gilad in a daring pre-dawn raid against what was suppose to be 'IDF soldiers on guard'. The IDF couldn't take that sitting down and needed to restore a reputation of "be scared of us". "Let the IDF win" had to be pushed once again. So it happened and the price to the people of Gaza is obvious, but the price for Israel will be trickier to access. The old "one Jewish fingernail is worth more than ..." is being exposed and the ruthlessness of the occupiers even more so, but the highest price will be that Jordan&Egypt will have to radicalize their policies, as will some Gulf States. America wont like that.
