What we see happening today in Iran is a direct result of the failed policies of the Bush administration. Hadn't it been for Bushes constant threats against Iran, Ahmadinejad would have never been elected. It is natural for people who feel under threat to elect a hardline president. Bush also seems to perceive any country which is willing to make concessions as weak. Examples are pre invasion Iraq and Syria. The moment they made concessions the door to a series of endless pressure and never ending backdown was opened. On the other hand the moment N. Korea defied the US and announced itself as a nuclear power, the US ruled out entirely military action and decided to engage N.Korea in 'talks'. This proved to the world that Bush only understands the language of force and led to Iran adopting this uncompromising attitude. Iran has great leverage- and they know this. The Iraq war proved the Americans vulnerbility and turned an enemy of Iran into a stalward ally.
