I agree with the article in all respects, but I must disagree with a recurring theme: Israel's master plan. I think it would be very nice indeed if Israel had a master plan, no matter how sinister. The truth is far more disturbing: Israel is fundamentally at a loss as to how to proceed, how to reconcile secular and orthodox, liberal (if not communist) and reactionary (if not fascist) tendencies. This kind of existential aporia is resolving in the same disturbing way as it did in Eastern Europe- by making violence integral to communication and so returning to archaic patriarchial social forms. It is not a plan, it is a national psychosis.
