from its inception, the central dilemma of how the Jewish State was to be both Jewish and democratic has never been solved. It may well be there is no solution. Under consecutive right wing governments, Israel has denied the creation of a two state solution and it has opted for a more than 40 yr policy of colonisation. But colonies, even if justified by divine right, are not sustainable and unless Israel stops its expansionism, it will become more isolated by the international community that will no longer tolerate its colonial policy of occupation and the colonies themselves from Emmanuel, Modi'in, to Kfar Tapuach, Bet El, Migron, Ma'ale Adumim and Ariel will simply, in time, atrophy. The status quo is unsustainable and the inevitable rise in racist policies will result in a world response which will duplicate that that was activated against apartheid South Africa.
