The reality is that the sanctions are just leverage in an ongoing diplomatic effort. The world suspects that Iran is working towards a break-out capability where it could within a year build nuclear weapons. This could be true. The sanctions will NEVER prevent an Iran determined to build a bomb from doing so. There is little solid evidence that Iran actually has a bomb program. The possibility that Iran is building a break-out capability is undeniable. What MIGHT the sanctions achieve? The sanctions cannot stop an Iranian bomb program. They CAN make it more important to Iran to return to the Additional Protocols and comply with the IAEA if they are not intent upon a bomb.
