You are a great kid Duncan, a great speaker, your heart is in the right place and am sure you will go far in life. But let's face it, you also represent what is happening to American Jews - they are rapidly disappearing, intermarrying (McAlpine?), and becoming a subgroup that is only really interested in repairing the world. They are massively removed from Israel (and often anti-Israel), Hebrew and Judaism (the Bar Mitzvah speech was not exactly steeped in Jewish thought), and apart from a shrinking minority, will not produce Jewish children or grandchildren. Yes they give America talent, moderation, bagels, chicken soup, a few amusing Yiddish words, chanukah bushes, guilt-ridden comedy and other historical curiosities, and America is probably all the richer for it. They even advise us about the evils of the "occupation", "shalom" and how we should also have civil marriage, and actually managed to stop hundreds of thousands of Russians from converting because of our insistence that reform conversions are not really valid (so better not to convert at all), causing untold future damage to the Jewish State. Perhaps this is good, and my own definition of Judaism and the Jewish nation is limited, and my raising my children in Israel is wrong and primitive, and instead I should be experimenting with Reconstructionism, Humanism, Reform Judaism, the Unitarian church, or the Democrats. Incidentally, Israel is by no means perfect, but at least Judaism (in all of its forms) is central to our life, and we can actually repair ourselves. I guess I am waiting for the day that the world that we are so busy trying to repair will also try to come and stand with us, just like how Duncan's parents make him stand in prop-something marches, but somehow that day seems very distant.

Israel was soft on Jewish terrorists in the 1980s - will history repeat itself?

The Jewish extremists of Israel’s past were quickly welcomed back into society as journalists, political activists and settler leaders. But experts say today’s offenders will not enjoy similar leniency.
