The Israeli rule is that appointments for heads of intelligence agencies (Mossad, Shin Bet) are for 5 years. Dagan's service was extended 3 times (by 1 year each) when he was viewed as a great success. Dagan managed to discover the alleged nuclear reactor in Syria, and to get Mughniyeh assassinated. But then came the huge debacle, the assassination of Hamas' Mabhuh in Dubai. Over 30 Mossad agents were burnt in this laughable operation which assassinated a replaceable nobody. One can only understand taking such a risk by an over-confidence bordering on megalomania. Both Dagan and Israel would have been better off if Dagan would have retired earlier. now he leaves with this unforgettable stain on his record.
