The question that needs to be asked is who is leading whom? The core of any democracy is its people. Is Israels political class leading its people down the path towards authoritarianism, or is it the Israeli public that's forcing its leaders down that path? I suspect it's the latter. A worldview that sees enemies everywhere...both from without and from within, nurtures authoritarianism and dictates an adversarial posture in all relations. One is tempted to feel saddened by that, until you realize the extent to which so many Israelis seem to relish their sense of victimhood, and how much pride they take in each and every diplomatic poke in the eye that their government inflicts. It seems to define their view of Israeli exceptionalism.
