The Palestinians have no potential leader with the stature to unify the people, with the possible exception of Barghouti, currently in an Israeli prison. Ghandi was once in prison, as was Mandella. Both went on to lead their people to freedom. Israel will take no such chances by releasing Barghouti. Ironically, two of Israels leaders, Begin and Shamir were once terrorist leaders. Both had far more blood on their hands than Barghouti ever had.
