His biggest sin was to find a way to eventually end the planned 100-year occupation of Iraq many decades earlier than some wanted. And he's now helping to find a way out of Afghanistan, too. He has and is proving that forever-war is possible to avoid. So yes, he got promoted to CENTCOM. That makes him have to look at things that affect US interests throughout the CENTCOM area and affects the risks US GIs are taking in the area. It is no longer the 19th Century where what happened in China or India had little effect on what happened elsewhere. People in faraway places like Kuwait and Iran and Iraq have all kinds of modern stuff: flush toilets and telephones and computers and TVs and running water. They get news and form opinions all on their own.
