The big question Avineri avoids is why, if the Pals recognise Israel, they also be forced to recognite as The Jewish State? I don't care what people recognise Britain as, as long as they leave us in peace. - Comment - Israel News | Haaretz Daily Newspaper

I don't care if they reognise it as a kingdom or not, if they recognise it as a mainly Christian state, or not, if they recognise it as a mainly English state or not. They can think what they like of us, as long as they leave us in peace. I don't care, because we Brits, in all different shapes, colours, sizes, ethnic and religious backgrounds know what we are. THAT'S what's important. This strange fanatical Israeli insistence on being recognised as a Jewish state is either a crafty way of excluding the Palestinian Right of Return or it's a sigh that Israeli Jews themselves aren't really sure what Israel is, about who a Jew is, and are insecure about it.
