This article was a typical unbalanced 'Haaretz' screed. Had its author been a bit fairer he would have pointed out that it is no small privilege to be excused of any kind of defense service in a country that must continually contend with those who would destroy it. He would point out that that privilege gives Arab young people a three year educational advantage over Jewish students. He would point out that municipal tax-paying is so low in Arab villages as to be non- existent. He would point out the disproportionate role the Arab population plays in violent crime. He would point out too the benefits the population has received and does receive in health and education terms from being part of the broader Israeli society. He also point out that the Arab minority has a special difficulty understanding the role of a minority in a Democracy. The Arabs are after all the great majority in the region. They are partof the three hundred fifty million Arabs and why should they then submit to the rule of a far smaller number of Jews? I do not say that there are not issues of discrimination but I do say it is necessary to try and present the whole picture.
