The Republican Party used to be the more "responsible" US party. While the Democrats were big spenders, the Republicans objected and were prudent fiscally. The party has lost its principles and mind recently. Now, "deficit doesn't matter", as Cheney said, and the other principles have shrunk to abortion and other religious-inspired dogmas. Something self-destructive has developed in the US, and it is no wonder that young people are caught up in this. Perhaps Berkeley youth have turned Republican. It happened before, when young Americans started supporting Reagan. The trouble now is that unlike Reagan, Republicans have gone bananas. I am worried about the US. American Jews should embrace J Street, not shun it.
