Zeev, Is it "preferable to have Bashar Assad sitting in Damascus - rather than the Muslim Brotherhood." Maybe, but regardless it makes sense for Israel to test Syrian willingness to negotiate. By refusing to respond to Syrian offers -- perhaps with U.S. encouragement (we'll leave that for a separate discussion) -- Israel allows Bashar Assad to stand tall. Test, probe, challenge - in public and in private - Syrian offers to negotiate. Try public diplomacy, even dare the Syrians to match -- all of this, at a minimum, could reveal a glimmer of hope; and if not -- Israel still gains by keeping the Assad regime slightly off-balance, particularly in the court of public opinion. Go ahead, test the Syrians -- Israel has little to lose!
