I think that Burston realizes something important which he is not stating explicitly in this article. He doesn’t combine the terms Jewish and democracy to describe Israel. He says Israel is Jewish state and a democracy. With many of the laws and proposed laws coming out of the Knesset, the pronouncements by Jewish religious leadership in Israel, and by the leadership of political parties such as Shas and Yisrael Beiteinu , the term ‘Jewish democracy’ has become associated by many in the world with a kind of triumphal perfection of Apartheid. I am not arguing the case here but when we worry about the ‘deligitimation’ of Israel the term ‘Jewish democracy’ which clearly Netanyahu will not specifically define is now becoming a code word for those opposed to the present Israeli policies and those who are just opposed to Israel. What is a Jewish democracy and do we care to let the world know?
