the syrian opposition is made up mainly of the muslim brotherhood. the bad experience with the muslim brotherhood in the countries of the "arab spring" has left western decision makers with a serious dilemma. the best solution would be a transfer of power to a new strongman, maybe a sunni close to the regime, who has an understanding of responsibility to the people.
