"Israel proposed to Syria peace agreement, based on this line, but Syria declined: it insisted on control over additional territory" - Shlomo Shlomo describes imprecise ancient history, and overlooks recent history. Barak wanted peace with Syria (no borders specified). Hafez Assad demanded the June 4th lines which included some area within Israel's international border. This demand was actually AGREED to, already by Rabin, who gave it as a "deposit" to Pres. Clinton, but not to Syria direcly; pending conclusion of peace talks. Barak RENEWED the "deposit", as did Peres before him. However, Barak also wanted some territorial exchange which would have pushed Syria about 200 meters off the Kinneret coast. (The int'l border is 10 meters off.) Barak initiated the Shepherdstown meeting with Syria to conclude the deal. When the time came, he got cold feet and did not pursue the talks! Recent history: Bashar Assad offers Sharon to negotiate peace with NO prior conditions. Sharon refused
