Assad is an Alawite, Shia offshoot, in a Sunni majority country. The crown rests uneasily on his head. The Saudis and the Egyptians are leading the Sunni charge to get a process going before the wildfire spreading from Iraq reaches their own uneasy crowns. But in the final analysis Syria won't separate itself from Iran because if Iran weren't a player Assad would be weaker.
