Bush failed in this respect by not listening to VP Cheney. After his decisions to go into Afghanistan and Iraq, Bush seemed timid and waffling when it made sense to carry the War on Terror to the epicenters of terrorism. North Korea may have been a stickier wicket. But the blatant attacks on US troops and personnel by Iranian orders were not faced down with force, encouraging the Iranians to double down. With Iraq and Afghanistan, and bases in Kyrghystan and other central Asian states (bases which were frittered away), Iran was bracketed and ready for decapitation. Not invasion, but removal of the mullahs and IRG and Basij bases that would have allowed the people to overthrow the terrorist government. VERY disappointing. And a lot more Iranian lives lost in their failed uprisings in later years than would have occurred in US strikes on their leadership to lead to regime change from within.
