Some major differences between the 2: 1. Syria 2007 has no backing of major world power. Egypt 1973 had Soviet support for arms shipments/technology. SAMs at that time offered a new defense against the Israeli air force. Neither Iran nor the "new" Russia offer anything like the old Soviet umbrella. 2. Egypt 1973 had Syria, at least, as an ally. Syria 2007 has no serious military ally unless Egypt abandons its peace treaty with Israel. Latter seems unlikely. 3. Egypt 1973 depended on Israeli unpreparedness for war - a mistake that one hopes will not be repeated. 4. Egypt 1973 was led by Sadat. Syria 2007 led by Assad. Syria is a sinking ship. In the next decade they will run out of oil. In view of their support for Hamas and Hezbollah, it seems ridiculous for Israel to throw them a lifeline.
