Why would Israel want to get rid of the Assad government? Now that the Assad family and its Allawi base are really 'up against the wall'surely this is the moment for Israel to 'make them an offer they can't refuse';and who better than Arik Sharon to make it? The Allawi have been (mis)governing Syria for over 30 years, but at least they provide internal stability. The economy is shot to pieces, but peace with Israel(and road and rail links from Damascus to Haifa through the Golan Heights)would turn the economy around in a decade. What's not to like? Overthrowing the Assads just leads to endless Sunni craziness in Damascus. Who benefits from this? Golan Heights, I hear you say...give it back to Syria and lease it from them for 99years, like the British did with Hong Kong.
