In Scandinavian countries women kept their own last names and this continued in New Sweden in the United States. Jews generally were latecomers to the ideas of surnames, often using "ben" as "son of" plus the first name of the father, or alternately using the place of origin as a last name. We say we don't want to copy the goyim, but in this case, we sure did, both in adopting surnames and in changing rules for women.
