I think you are right. I am an American When I was in college many years ago, few Jews cared about Israel at all. I certainly never thought about Israel. Once or twice I was asked whether I was a Zionist. I always said "no" because I felt that Zionists were people who felt that all Jews should go to Israel and I did not (and still don't) agree that they should. I am on campus a lot these days because I teach at a medical school that is connected to a university. Hillel and other Jewish groups are generally quite active in support of Israel. Much more so than previously. And, though I still don't want to live in Israel myself I consider myself a Zionist on the basis of supporting Israel. Finally, wonder of wonders, a large number of Christians seem to be highly supportive of Israel..
