For over fifty years I have supported Israel. I'm not Jewish, but most of my family are. I supported Israel as the most democratic and sane entity in the middle east; as the locus of education, technological innovation, medical knowledge, and human rights. My fellow progressives have long parted company. We struggle together for democracy and social progress in the US, but they have been won over to blind criticism of Israel and to the divestment phenomenon. My friends who visited the West Bank and saw the way the settlers treated the Palestinians, how the wall cut through Palestinian olive orchards, the treatment of Palestinians by the IDF, the kid glove treatment of the settlers by the same soldiers. My friends and I have not yet found a way to discuss this rationally. But in the wake of continued maltreatment and truly God-awful policies; in the prejudicial bowing toward the ultra-Orthodox; in the rantings of Lieberman, I find myself struggling to maintain my support for Israel. Please, Israelis, change before it is too late. Perhaps it already is, but I fervently hope not.
