21st century wars are no longer military set pieces to be won or lost on some well defined battlefield. The battlefield is usually a town or city in or amongst the civilian population. Moreover, the military, political and media elements cannot be separated. Clauswitz says somewhere that war is a continuation of foreign policy by other means and the converse also holds.(successful) Terrorist organisations reflect the aspirations of their host nations. They are born out of a massive sense of injustice and they start to die when there are legitimate hopes for peace justice and prosperity. To bludgeon a defenceless population with the full panoply of modern war technology, Jets, Missiles, Artillary, Tanks and so on and remain indifferent to collatoral civilian injuries and loss of life (leaving aside the wilful destruction of precious infrastructure in what is a third world country) - will simply strengthen the sense of Palistinian outrage and drive Hezbolla ever closer into the arms of its host popoulation. It is a policy as bone headidly stupid as it is immoral

Not a migrant, not an immigrant – there has to be a third option, but he doesn't know how to say it in English, Arabic or Hebrew.

How the bagel went from shtetls to haute cuisine

A visit to the world's bagel capital is a chance to marvel at how this unassuming Jewish-Ashkenazi food has come from its 17th-century beginnings.
