The State of Israel undertook to plant fortified Jewish settlements in Judea and Samaria for strategic reasons. First, they wanted to force any advancing Iraqi/Jordanian/Syrian army to fight their way to the Israeli border, instead of just rolling up to it. Second, it is far better to fight intfadas in the streets of Nablus than in the streets of Netanya. The Pals prefer the reverse scenario, obviously. The much-reviled settlers are drawn to Judea for religious-nationalist reasons. This is not different from the Arab attachment to Mecca. Those who are not strongly motivated by religious or nationalist feeling, ought to try to respect these sentiments nonetheless.
