Let the reporter console himself with the belief--mistaken--that the issue of the West Bank is neatly divided between those who believe in the State and those who believe in Halacha (who can therefore be dismissed as ignorant fundamentalists, no better than Arab racists). The fact is that many who oppose giving up the West Bank are not "halachists" and root their opinions in the understanding that to do so would be tantamount to national suicide, with rockets raining down on the entire middle of the country, as they now do in Sderot. The sad fact underlying the bitterness of these families, morevoer, is not "halachism" but that Israel betrayed the heroes of Gush Katif and continues to betray them with every day of continued demonization and vilification. Finally, in defense of "halacha" one wonders what, at bottom, is the reason the reporter lives in Israel, unless it was for the same reason the settlers are in Hebron--that this land was given by God for Jews to live in?
