The Romans renamed the province to Syria-Palestina (named after the Philistines) in 135 AD, following the defeat of the Bar Kochba Rebellion as a final act of humiliation to the Jewish inhabitants of the region. Before that, the province was named Iudea (Judea), and before that it was the Hasmonean kingdom of Judea, founded by the Maccabees.
