I don't believe there is any connection to Yachimovich's Labor candidacy (which was not known in advance). But something strange is happening with Barak. Not only did he finally move to evacuate an illegal settlement, but he also announced that peace with Syria should be pursued. This is something he had known for ever, since the IDF's intelligence branch believes Assad is interested in peace. Strangely, Netanyahu too is beginning to realize that his "no movement" policy is bad internationally, as he essentially said today. Perhaps the two friends, Netanyahu and Barak, have decided to make some show of softening towards international pressures. Are they sincere? Probably as long as the pressure lasts. But any progress is good news.
