In 1948, the US under Truman recognized the new State of Israel even without the concurrence of Israel's neighbors. Today, the US won't recognize much of anything Israel wants (and expects as a sovereign nation) unless the Palestinians go along with it. For years, the US treated at least western Jerusalem de facto as part of Israel, but under Obama the White House and State Department have aggressively gone over web site references to "Jerusalem, Israel" so that they now read "Jerusalem". In response to the 2002 law directing the move of the US embassy to Jerusalem, this administration acquired property intended for that future embassy and instead built a new US *Consulate*. But that Consulate isn't intended to serve as a point of contact with Israel or US citizens who happen to be Jewish. Rather, it's the de facto embassy to the PALESTINIANS, operating from a Jewish neighborhood in WESTERN Jerusalem. Clearly, this administration won't even recognize Jewish rights to western Jerusalem unless the Palestinians go along with it. Israelis who see this and US Jews aware of this have good reason not to trust this administration.
