Ever since the creation of the State of Israel, there has been a contradiction between who is accepted & welcomed as a citizen of Israel ie. anyone with a single Jewish grandparent (David Beckham & Nicholas Sarkozy would qualify for starters) and who qualifies as Jewish in the eyes of the religious establishment which is according to Halacha. All Israelis should be treated equally & should demonstrate pride in being Israeli whether they are Halachic Jews, non Halachic Jews or Non Jews...Consider this, if only Halachic Jews were allowed to serve in the Armed Forces, the State of Israel would probably never have survived the war of independence in 1948 to remain intact as a 'Jewish State'. Mr Burg is dead right, there must be a separation between the State which is a modern creation and Judaism which in many respects is outdated & destabilizing to the evolution of the State of Israel.
