Somaliland is a peaceful except in the patchwork of countries in the Horn of Africa, torn apart by war and conflict. Somaliland formally belongs to the civil war Somalia. But while conflict rages in Somali capital Mogadishu and the militant Islamist al-Shabab guerrillas control large parts of the country, there is a stable peace in Somaliland. In practice, broke Somaliland free as early as 1991, when the Somali central regime collapsed. Since then, Somaliland conducted peaceful election three times before last Saturdays election. And although the 2003 election was decided by a margin of about 80 votes when all ballots were counted, as did all but violence that Dahir Riyale Kahin was elected President. There is no doubt that Somaliland will be recognized by the international community if it continues in this path.
