It is remarkable that Shalit has lived as long as he has. There are over a thousand Palestinians that were living normal (for them) lives when Shalit was captured that have since been unexpectedly killed by Israel. It just goes to show you that Gaza is not a place to be if you want to live to a ripe old age. This is also true for Gilad Shalit. Israel was not particularly interested in redeeming him. After all, he was not exactly a hero. Just imagine. A tank crew which is supposed to be on guard duty being killed and captured by a handful of militants. If Shalit had enterd a mosque and sprayed the occupants with machine gun fire and was captured, he would have long since been bailed out by Israel.
