All wishfull thinking aside, any israeli govt acting in accordance with its responsibilities to its citizens can only accept a palestinian self-governing state if that state is going to cooperate in lowering the security risk to israeli citizens. That is the simple and plain fact as of this decade. Maybe in 20 years, things will be different, if the palestinians want to wait that long for their own independent state. But if they want self-governing status now, their palestinian leaders had better be willing to do exactly as Amira Hess says that they are being pressured to do. If they are not willing to do so, the current status will remain indefinitly and there will be no peace in our time.
