Israel should press the US and Congress for arms sanctions on the Egyptian junta-run government until they follow through on 1) prosecution of the perpetrators, including publically firing the first flag vandal with jail and by firing him from the government job he received for stealing it, 2) paying the entire cost of repair for damage to the embassy and compensating Israel for the cost of evacuating the staff, 3) taking credible steps to prevent a recurrence, and 4) ending anti-Israel hatemongering in the state-controlled media. The entire episode must be investigated by both sides and a neutral 3rd party with full transparency, especially including the role of Egypt's top junta leaders in staging the attack; this means a formal explanation for Tantawi's refusal to talk to Israeli or US officials or to order a halt to the embassy attack for hours.
