The UN recognition came as a result of Israel's refusal to end its colonization scheme and find a peaceful resolution. The world simply got fed up with this old conflict and Israel's continued breach of international law. The prisoner release was a compromise since Israel refused to stop colonizing the occupied territories and Abbas didn't want to sit through dead-end talks with Israel while this colonization was ongoing. IF the Palestinians were intending to break off the talks after the agreed upon time-period that was entirely up to them, the agreement was talks for a determined period of time in return for the release of the prisoners. This was a way to test Israel's seriousness about the peace talks, it was not an agreement to stand idly by forever and ever while Israel colonizes every last bit of Palestine. Israel broke the agreement by not living up to its obligations and its intransigence during the talks shows that it never had any intention of reaching a solution. It is well past time you got it into your head that the occupation and the colonization are illegal.
