Everydoby knew that haredim would cost more money than the rest of the population. The question was how loud you shouted. The reasonable people didn't shout because they weren't interested in spending the money, nor were they interested in drafting them because it would create disruptions in the current state of the IDF culture and society. Better to be mostly secular, and leave it at that, even if there were projections that there might be shortfalls in the next few decades--that is, you can shoot dormanim in the hills of the Gallilee, roast them on IDF time and . . .. keep it on the shoo shoo. Put some Haredi non-com in the unit, and that non-losher delicacy will be off the menu, just for one example of IDF cutlure. There is nothing wrong with making the kashrut in the IDF mess Mehandrin since most of the meal are alreadly prepared by outside caterers anyway. The issue of female personaell, well, Haredi units wouldn't tolerate them anyway, either. The milltary would not be a problem ether, since they know they are defending the Land of Israel, and getting points by cutting corners in a career, as we have discovered is far too common in Zahal, might not be as present. Heck, what's one hour of a Daf Yomi going to do to a solcier's routine anyway. Get them back to "the Sources", perhaps, instead of watching teevee in the clubhouse? A little consideration to a person for whom a "religious lifesthyle" is impoertant might not be so bad, even the Mesorati'im might not have problems hididng the fact they care for the Traditional aspects of Jewish life, even in the Army!
